Information about the School

St George Girls High School (enrolment 930 students, including 91.7% students from a Language Background Other than English) is an academically selective state high school with a well-respected reputation for providing exceptional educational outcomes and opportunities for high potential learners since 1916. 

The school offers a broad curriculum and a range of opportunities allowing students to achieve excellence in academic, creative, social, cultural, sporting, leadership and community endeavours. Enrolment Processes

St George Girls High School has an enrolment ceiling of 150 students in Years 7-10.  New students will be considered for enrolment only when a current student leaves the school. In Year 11, the maximum number of students considered for enrolment is 168. The Principal determines the number of new students each year in Year 11, based on the results from the Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) compiled by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the selection committee interview process. 

Year 7 Enrolment

Year 7 placements are administered by the High Performing Students Team. Year 7 entry into selective schools is determined by the student's results in the Selective High School Placement Test in English (including reading and writing), Mathematics and general ability, together with their primary school's assessment of their performance in English and Mathematics.

Applications for placement in 2022 will open in early October 2020 and close in mid-November 2020. The test is expected to be held on 11 March 2021.

Open Day 2021 at St George Girls High School

Open Day for prospective students and their parents will be held on Thursday 26 August 2021. Registration for Open Day is essential. Bookings open at the start of Term 3.

Entrance into Years 8 – 11, 2021

Testing is Required for 2021 Entry

Applications for Years 8 - 11 entry to St George Girls High School in 2021 will be available on the school’s website from Friday 19 June 2020. The closing date for applications is Friday 24 July 2020 at 3:00pm. Late applications will NOT be accepted.

The selective high schools listed below are coordinating their entrance test procedures for Years 8 – 11. The Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) will be held on Saturday 8 August 2020.

  • Fort Street High School - Year 11 only
  • Girraween High School
  • Gosford High School

If you wish to apply for other selective schools not on the above list, please make direct contact with the individual school.

In determining academic merit for an offer of placement, the Selection Committee will consider the following criteria:  

•    Applicants performance in the ACER HAST which assesses reading, written expression, mathematical reasoning and abstract reasoning
•    Academic achievement as demonstrated in the two most recent school reports
•    Personal Reflection Statement completed by the student upon application
•    Possible student interview based on performance in the HAST.

You are entitled to apply for entry to a maximum of 3 selective high schools. To gain entry into one of the above selective schools in Years 8 – 11, your child will need to sit a test developed by the Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) Melbourne at the school listed as your first preference https://www.acer.org/au/hast-secondary.

The application fee of $100 must be paid to the school that you have nominated as your first preference from the group of schools listed above. The student will sit the HAST test at that school. 

If your first preference is St George Girls High School, you will need to apply for and pay the $100 application fee to St George Girls High School prior to Friday 24 July 2020 and then your child will sit the test at St George Girls High School on Saturday 8 August 2020 in the School Hall commencing at 9:30am.  

Photograph Identification of the candidate must be presented at the time of the examination – e.g. passport or official school ID card. The original ‘Acknowledging Receipt of Application’ email or mail must also be presented at the time of the examination.

An application fee of $100 must be paid to St George Girls High School when the application is submitted. The application fee pays for the setting and marking of the test by Australian Council Educational Research (ACER) Melbourne and for the supervision of the test on Saturday 8 August 2020 by external invigilators.

If you have nominated a second or third preference from the list above, you must also submit a separate application to those schools. If St George Girls High School is your second or third preference you MUST still complete and send an application form to the school so we can register your preference. An administration fee of $30 will be charged to process the application.

Academic Merit

Residency Status

Candidates must be Australian citizens or holders of a visa granting permanent residency status in Australia.

Citizens of New Zealand who are permanently settled in Australia are eligible for entry.

Permanent residents of New Zealand, like temporary residents of Australia, cannot be placed.

Applicants who do not meet these residency requirements at the time of applying, but expect to meet them by the time offers are made, will be allowed to apply provided that they are already living in Australia. Such applicants will have to show evidence that they meet all residency requirements, before being made an offer of placement.

Applicants must show original documentation, such as a certificate of evidence of Australian citizenship, birth certificate or permanent residency visa before the enrolment is finalised.

Students born in Australia with a parent who was a citizen or permanent resident at the time of the student’s birth must show full birth certificates. (The residency status of the parents is listed on the birth certificate.)

Students whose parents were not citizens or permanent residents at the time of the student’s birth must show their citizenship papers or passports or a permanent residency visa.

Offers may be cancelled if placement is made on the basis of false or misleading information.

Residential Address

Parents must be living in New South Wales by the beginning of the 2021 school year. If parents normally live in New South Wales but are temporarily out of the state, they should expect to return before the start of the school year. 

An electricity or gas bill in the name of the parent at a New South Wales address is considered sufficient proof of New South Wales residency.

Please read through and follow the instructions on the Application forms and include all the relevant supporting documents to the application including Proof of Citizenship or Residency.

All applications must be submitted by 3:00pm on Friday 24 July 2020 via one of the following three options:

  • Email the entire Application Package (as a PDF attachment) to applications@sgghs.com.au, in the email subject line please enter ‘Year (year group applying for) Application 2021applicant’s name’ e.g. Year 8 Application – Georgina Saint. In the email, please include online payment receipt number. Emails must be received by 3:00pm on Friday 24 July 2020. Emails received after this time will not be accepted.
  • Submit in person – you MUST make an appointment to submit the application in person by contacting the school on 9587 5902. Applications will not be accepted if you have not made an appointment.
  • Mail application to St George Girls High School, Victoria Street, Kogarah 2217. All applications mailed on Friday 24 July 2020 must be post marked 24 July 2020 by the Post Office.

You must also send separate applications to all the selective high schools in which you are seeking enrolment.

Surname - enter the applicant’s name 
Class or Year - leave blank 
Ref Number - leave blank 
Date of Birth - enter the applicant’s date of birth 
Contact Details - enter parent contact details (name, phone number and email) 
Click - ‘Next Section’ 
Payment Type - click drop down and select ‘Other’ 
Description - enter ‘Year (year applying for) Application 2021' (e.g. Year 8 Application 2021) 
Amount - enter 100.00 or 30.00 dependent upon application preference 
Click - ‘Next Section’ 
Card Details - enter credit card details as requested on screen 
Click - ‘Proceed to Confirmation’

Once confirmed, please make note of your receipt number and include this with your emailed application. 

How Many Students Gain Entry to St George Girls from Years 8 – 11 in 2020?

In 2020 at St George Girls High School, no students were invited to enrol in Year 8, 7 places in Year 9, 4 in Year 10 and 25 in Year 11 were offered due to available places.
